Art 2 Final Exam
|
1.
How do you describe your artistic style/perspective? How do you define success as an artist? What do you find most rewarding about being an artist? What are some of the most important skills you draw upon to create your work? What are some of the most significant things you've learned through art-making? I don't really know what my artistic style is, as I haven't given it much thought. Success as an artist is being able to make money (obviously), actually enjoying what you do, and being able to influence people with your art. Or at least that's how I define it. The most rewarding thing about being an artist is being able to do what you love and having the ability to share it with other people. The ability to think productively and creatively is essential when planning a new piece, without it you may as well just throw whatever on a canvas without thought and call it art (some people can actually do that, but I cannot). Some of the most significant things I've learned through creating art would include the thought that less is more. This applies to mixing colors, 2. Look at your body of work over the semester and choose 2 pieces that show your growth as an artist. Discuss each piece and how you grew in the following areas: application of materials, techniques and skills, artistic vision, use of the principles and elements, creativity, intuition and subject matter. The two pieces that I believe show my growth as an artist would have to be the Clay Food assignment and recreating the Artist's Painting. The clay assignment tested my skills in molding and manipulating clay to my liking. The assignment also involved a heavy amount of color mixing, which I believe I did a good job on throughout this assignment. I did my best to make the "food" look real and somewhat edible. For the reimagining of the artist's painting I chose Emil Nolde. His art included a lot of unique subjects and colors. For that assignment, I made sure to mix colors that were bright but not too cheerful, since a lot of Nolde's pieces were often disturbing and dark. 3. Reflect on what your portfolio (all work you created through semester) may not reveal about the semester. Do you think the work in your portfolio is an accurate reflection of your development in the class? How and why? All the work we've been assigned in this class has been to further improve our artistic abilities, so I'd like to think that my portfolio is an accurate reflection of my development in this class. I took painting last semester and at the beginning of that semester I was a horrible painter. After doing many, many assignments I seemed to have improved in some way. To get better at something, you have to practice it a lot before seeing results. The mini lessons we had been assigned were meant to benefit us in hopes of improving our skills. After all the projects and mini lessons in this class I'd like to think I'll be leaving a somewhat better artist. Looking back at my work from the beginning of the year and from past art classes I can see a big difference in my art compared to now. I may still be bad in certain types of media, but in other areas I've definitely improved. 4. Choose 2 mini lessons that you felt were the most beneficial in your learning for that particular project. Include photos of these and explain thoroughly. Do you feel you needed more instruction for success? Explain or did you feel that the instruction given was enough to ensure success? Explain. The two mini lessons that I felt were very beneficial would have to be: copying the artists' painting and also the acrylic value charts. The value charts allowed me to practice color mixing. They also reminded me that the amount of white or black you mix with another color with can greatly affect your final color. Copying the painting I was given allowed me to put the color mixing skills to use. I found that copying the painting was a lot easier than I thought it would be, even though I struggled a bit. I don't feel like more instruction was required for either mini lesson, as they were both pretty self explanatory, but that's just my opinion. |
